For those who don’t know, a capsule wardrobe is a sum-up of your basic pieces that you can wear in multiple different ways, over and over again, so you don’t have to worry about what you’re going to wear next. I’m going to give you the ins and outs of what you need in your capsule wardrobe.
White T-Shirt

Regardless of your personal style, you’re going to need a white T-shirt. It’s a hardworking piece that goes with everything—white leg jeans, trouser pants, blazers, you name it. I’m conveniently wearing one underneath my button-up right now. White T-shirts are crucial for layering, so find the one with the perfect cut and style for you.
Depending on the type of girl you are or the outfits you’re going for, you might prefer a white T-shirt with a V-cut for a sexier silhouette—maybe paired with dark denim jeans and a cute belt. Then there’s the boxier fit, which is more traditional and gives a boyish look. That’s my preferred fit because it goes with absolutely everything.
Button-Down Shirt

A button-down shirt really forms the backbone of my capsule wardrobe. It goes with everything, is easy to layer, packs well for travel, and works for both office and casual wear.
You can’t go wrong with a clean, crisp button-up. I have a plain white one from the men’s section—it’s slim fit and perfect for me. Then there’s my Polo Ralph Lauren Oxford, which has amazing material and feels different. You can wear it more casually. If you’re a little more advanced, get a pale blue button-up, which goes with a lot, and a striped one with blue stripes that pairs well with jeans or trousers.
Blazer

A blazer is clearly a need in your wardrobe. Fit is crucial depending on what you’re going for. For your capsule wardrobe, get a looser fit so it works for both professional and casual settings.
Start with a black blazer, then add gray and navy blue. If this isn’t your first rodeo, get a taupe or nude blazer to elevate your wardrobe.
Straight Leg Jeans

Straight-leg jeans are literally my go-to. I’m not really a skinny jeans person, and I’m steering away from wide leg. Straight leg is the in-between that works well with sneakers, pumps, and boots.
For fall, start with a medium to dark wash pair. Then add blush and light wash options. Whatever you do, invest in a quality pair that will last for decades so you don’t have to keep repurchasing.
Cardigans

Cardigans are great layering tools for both inside and outside the office. You can choose short or long, thick or light. They’re crucial for fall but also great for warmer seasons when layered over spring or summer dresses.
Offices are cold—air conditioning is always on 50 to 60 degrees—so you’ll need a cardigan to stay warm. My favorite is a long, thick one from Aritzia. It’s beautiful, a little pricey, but worth it whether I’m in the office or out.
Suede Jackets

Suede jackets have been everywhere lately. They’re a little hard to find, but they’re definitely needed. Suede adds spice and texture to your outfit and makes it look like you know what you’re doing.
Since our capsule wardrobe is based on basics, suede gives that extra pop. I’m obsessed with my Banana Republic trench. I haven’t worn it yet because October’s been hot, but it’s one of my favorites and definitely a keeper.
Top Coat

You shouldn’t attempt cold weather without a top coat. Every fashion person has one they’re obsessed with. Top coats add warmth and a chic feel without bulk. I have a gray one from Zara’s Monteco collection, and I love it. For your first overcoat, get a black one, then a gray one, and then explore colored coats.
Cashmere Sweaters

Cashmere sweaters are crucial. You can wear them over button-ups and T-shirts, and pair them with jeans or trousers. I love a good cashmere sweater. When shopping, pay attention to quality and make sure it doesn’t itch. You want it to be comfortable and warm. Always go for neutral tones.
Black Dress

Every woman should have a black dress. It’s the dress you wear for occasions—meetings, dinners, nights out with friends. I recommend a form-fitting maxi dress that fits all occasions.
That way, you’re not buying a million different dresses. You’ll always have one that works for any person, place, or thing.
Trousers

Trousers are the sweatpants of your wardrobe. I don’t recommend skinny trousers—go for straight or wide leg. They pair well with sneakers, pumps, and booties. Start with black trousers, then add brown, and finally neutral beige or gray. That way you’re covered for all your top pieces.
Everyday Sneakers
Slim, sporty sneakers are timeless. Neutral tones over stark white. Adidas is everywhere in all colors and shapes. They’re not for everyone, but they’re a great example of a sneaker that goes with almost everything—trousers, jeans, skirts, and more.
Heels
Heels elevate a dress or jeans. It’s crucial to pick the perfect pair. I suggest mid to low heel height for versatility. I have three types: black slingbacks, neutral cream pumps, and black suede pumps for fall. Pumps come in many colors and really elevate your work wardrobe, making you look chic.
Sunglasses

A sleek black pair of sunglasses that fits your face frame—not too big or chunky—is ideal. Chunky styles are usually more trendy, but you want something versatile for both dressed-up and dressed-down looks. Blue light glasses are also trending and add a smart, chic touch.
Belt

The belt should be nearly invisible. We all love a statement belt, but for your capsule wardrobe, go timeless. I wear one from All Saints frequently. It’s of great quality, flexible, and clean. It elevates your look and ties the outfit together seamlessly.
Baseball Caps

Caps aren’t just for greasy roots. I love A-frame hats for structure, but dad hats still work. They add a casual, effortless vibe. Baseball caps say, “I’m stylish, but today’s my day off.”
Tote Bags

Tote bags are the MVP of the season and a must for your capsule wardrobe. Whether you’re a mom on the go, a work baddie, or a college student, tote bags give you space and style. They say, “I’m on the go, but I’ve got it together.” You can find them in all price ranges, and they don’t have to be costly.
That’s it. Sixteen capsule essentials that will carry you through autumn and beyond. Whether you’re starting fresh or refining your wardrobe, this list is your blueprint. Happy shopping, and I’ll see you in the next post.
